Jakarta, January 7, 2021 – Shell recorded rapid growth in the expansion of its gas station business in 2020, increasing from 108 gas stations in 2019 to 137 gas stations by the end of 2020. This represents an increase of approximately 27% compared to the previous year. Located throughout DKI Jakarta, Banten, West Java, East Java, and North Sumatra, these Shell gas stations are ready to serve customers with high-quality fuel and non-fuel products—including lubricants and oil-change services—as well as convenience stores, restrooms, and clean, comfortable prayer rooms.
Shell gas stations are not only located in major cities but also in secondary cities such as Karawang, Cirebon, Tuban, and Jombang. This expansion of the gas station network is part of Shell’s commitment to helping revitalize local economies and providing world-class fuel to the people of Indonesia.
Of the total 137 operating Shell gas stations, 16 are joint investments between Shell and local business partners participating in the Shell Dealer Owned Dealer Operated (DODO) program. This program provides entrepreneurs with the opportunity to own and manage gas stations alongside Shell as a business partner ready to offer a variety of support.
In 2021, Shell will continue to actively collaborate with business partners to develop Shell gas stations in various regions across Indonesia. “2021 will be a crucial year for Indonesia as it works toward economic recovery following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, Shell invites local entrepreneurs to work together to drive the local economy and contribute to building Indonesia’s economy through the gas station business,” said Agung Saputra, Head of Dealer Network at Shell Indonesia.
By the end of 2020, indicators for the sectors supporting the gas station business did indeed show improvement. As reported by GAIKINDO, car sales data increased nearly sevenfold—from 7,871 units in April to 53,844 units in November. Changes in public behavior also appear to be favoring the business prospects of gas stations. A survey conducted by McKinsey from September 21–30, 2020, showed that Indonesian consumers have begun venturing out of their homes for various purposes but tend to avoid public transportation and opt for private vehicles instead.
Modular Gas Stations for Second-Tier Cities
Throughout 2020, Shell Indonesia did not limit itself to building large gas stations in major cities. Together with its partners, Shell also constructed modular gas stations with an area of 1,000–1,300 m² and a daily fuel capacity of 4–6 kiloliters. So far, Shell has built two modular gas stations, in Jombang (East Java) and Cirebon (West Java). These modular gas stations are designed to serve the market in Indonesia’s second-tier cities and come with a more affordable investment cost.
