Although many illegal cosmetics were still seized during raids by the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency throughout 2018, it turns out that quite a few Indonesian women are not tempted by illegal cosmetics. A survey of more than 17,000 Indonesian women who are customers of beauty clinics—compiled in the ZAP Beauty Index—revealed that more than 64% of Indonesian women prioritize the safety of beauty products over low prices.
So it’s no surprise that 27% of women aged 36–55 hope that the beauty industry will include a halal label on every product it releases. In contrast, teenage girls under 18 still prioritize low prices over cosmetic safety.
The ZAP Beauty Index also captures the economic habits of 17,000 Indonesian women who are beauty clinic customers. Only 21% of women purchase cosmetics through social media, while 54% still prefer to buy them at official retail outlets. Debit cards are the most commonly used payment method among Indonesian women when shopping for beauty products, surpassing cash and credit cards.

The ZAP Beauty Index is a survey conducted by ZAP Clinic and Markplus among 17,889 Indonesian women between March and July 2018. This is the first most complete and comprehensive survey of beauty industry consumers in Indonesia.
The findings above are just a small fraction of the dozens of other findings included in the ZAP Beauty Index. The survey results also reveal other data, such as which countries’ skincare brands are the most popular, what consumers expect most from beauty products, the primary media sources they use to research products, and how much millennial women versus Generation X women spend monthly on beauty treatments.
The full results of the ZAP Beauty Index will be presented by ZAP Clinic at the ZAP Beauty Index launch event on August 20, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., at Qubicle, Senopati, South Jakarta.
Since transitioning from a hair removal clinic to a beauty clinic in 2013, ZAP Clinic has experienced rapid growth that exceeds the beauty industry average. As of mid-June 2018, ZAP Clinic had opened 37 locations across 13 cities. The enthusiastic market response has led ZAP to plan on expanding its network to 50 locations by the end of 2018.
During the first half of 2018, the number of beauty treatments at ZAP reached 561,377, a 48 percent jump compared to the first half of 2017. This growth is far above the average growth rate of the beauty industry, which is only about 12 percent per year (L’Oreal data – 2016).
