A Look at Digital Signature Users in Indonesia

The rapid adoption of digital signatures in Indonesia to boost business efficiency has led to a surge in the number of digital signature users. It is not just private companies that are transitioning to digital signatures; the government, through the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), has also begun aggressively implementing digital signatures for licensing at various Investment and One-Stop Integrated Service Agencies (DPMPTSP).

The rapid growth of digital signatures is also evident in the rapid growth of PrivyID users, which in the last 6 months has nearly doubled from 1 million to 1.9 million users across Indonesia.

Of the 1.9 million PrivyID digital signature users, the majority are still concentrated on the island of Java. A total of 59 percent of them are from Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Depok, and Bekasi. Meanwhile, when broken down by profession, 70 percent of the 1.9 million digital signature users are private-sector employees, with an age range of 25–40 years.

Digital signature users in Indonesia are also still predominantly male. A total of 62 percent of PrivyID’s 1.9 million digital signature users are men, while the remaining 38 percent are women.

The availability of digital signature platforms like PrivyID in the form of mobile apps appears to be popular among users. Of the 1.9 million PrivyID digital signature users, 63 percent are accustomed to signing documents via smartphone apps. Meanwhile, 37 percent still prefer to sign via laptops or desktop computers.

So, how many documents are signed digitally? According to PrivyID data, in the first half of 2018, the number of documents signed digitally via the PrivyID platform grew rapidly. Each month, 110,669 documents were signed digitally through PrivyID. This figure surged by 159 percent compared to the same period last year, bringing the total number of documents digitally signed via PrivyID from January through June 2018 to 664,009.

This high growth rate indicates that the use of digital signatures has become commonplace for Indonesians in this fast-paced era.

Our next task is to educate the public on choosing digital signatures that comply with the law (ITE Law, Article 11, Paragraph 8).
