Pertamina Lubricants Launches Environmentally Friendly Diesel Exhaust Fluid

To support sustainable business practices and maintain a healthy, pollution-free environment, Pertamina Lubricants has launched its latest product, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). DEF is a urea-based fluid that is colorless, odorless, and safe—meaning it is non-toxic to both the environment and humans.

This product is specifically designed to meet the needs of diesel vehicles equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. SCR technology itself is now increasingly used in the latest generation of diesel vehicles and fleets to comply with strict emissions regulations. Diesel Exhaust Fluid works by reducing the levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx)—harmful gases that are one of the main causes of air pollution—in diesel engine exhaust emissions.

In line with the global trend toward more environmentally friendly vehicles, the launch of DEF is a strategic move by Pertamina Lubricants to meet the growing market demand, with a potential volume of up to 18,000 KL per year.

The development of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid product is the result of synergistic collaboration between Pertamina Lubricants and a number of strategic partners within the state-owned enterprise ecosystem. Pertamina Research Technology and Innovation provided support in developing the DEF product formulation, while Pupuk Kujang Cikampek (PKC) supplied the main raw material: high-quality Low Biuret Urea. This synergy creates a strong business ecosystem, enhances supply chain resilience, and drives the national industry toward more sustainable practices.

The launch of this product is also in line with the government’s policy, through the Ministry of Industry, which has established Euro 5 vehicle emission standards set to take effect in 2027. As such, Pertamina Lubricants’ DEF supports the readiness of industry players and diesel vehicle users to meet these new emission standards.
