In the PR agency industry, data is a key component of PR strategy, providing insights to clients. Data helps PR agencies analyze trends, understand their audience, and evaluate campaign effectiveness. This enables agencies to overcome biases and develop more targeted communication strategies.
For example, by using data from social media, PR agencies can gauge public sentiment toward a specific brand. This data can be used to create campaigns that better align with audience preferences, mitigate the risk of backlash, and boost engagement. Additionally, data helps measure campaign success—whether goals have been met or if strategic adjustments are needed. Thus, data isn’t just a supporting tool; it serves as the foundation that strengthens every strategic move a PR agency makes.”
Although not all data is available for free (or easily accessible), there are several free analytics tools that can help optimize your strategy and support the insights you provide.
Here are some of my favorites:
Table of Contents:
Excellent for understanding the popularity and trends of keywords and search terms.
Excellent for comparing search trends for various keywords over a specific period (Google Trends data is available dating back to 2004).
Great for gauging public sentiment and conversations, especially regarding viral topics or during crises. I’ve used this tool several times to monitor trends—to see if an issue has become a trending topic and is showing signs of escalating into a crisis.
Keyword Surfer is a free tool that’s also great for finding monthly search volume, cost-per-click for keywords, and top related keywords.
Use this tool if you want to find out the top keywords or search terms people use to look for a specific topic or brand.
The data they provide may not be as comprehensive as that from paid software or analytics tools. However, it’s very helpful for PR agencies’ research work.
In addition to having free tools in your toolkit, it’s also important to continuously update your knowledge and skills in data analysis. Taking online courses, attending webinars, or reading the latest books and articles on trends and cutting-edge analytical methods will help you stay at the forefront of developing effective, data-driven PR strategies. In this way, your PR strategy will not only rely on the available tools but also enhance your overall analytical capabilities.
